Certainly not with a choke chain or pinch collar. There is no substitute for good training from as soon as you get your dog and I would recommend attending classes to get help to start with or asking one of our dog trainers for new puppy training advice.
There are of course several training aids on the market in the shape of dog halters, special harnesses and training leads and along with patience and consistent training these can be very useful but are rarely totally effective alone.
Any Tips?
Perhaps one of the best know lethods of correcting the behaviour is the "Follow Me" technique. With this method you should have a good quality training lead, extended to about 1 metre with the rest looped in your hand. Allowing the dog to forge ahead you should then drop the loop and quickly walk off in another direction, jerking the dog who will then start to follow you. As he moves ahead agin, drop the loop and change direction again, and again, and again.
After a short while, most dogs get the idea and decide to stay at your side as they can then see you change direction before getting a yank from the lead.
Of course the first couple of times you try this, don't expect to get very far on your walk but do persevere as it is important to be consistant with this training.
One of the best products known to date for help with training your dog to stop pulling on the lead is the Canny Collar which, is available from the K9 Capers Store and if used correctly, doesn't just stop your dog from pulling but can actually train him that staying "at heel" with you is far more rewarding.
Choke chains can be very cruel as they restrict the dogs airway and if used incorrectly can damage a dogs throat. At K9 Capers we believe in training with reward not punishment. Choke chains rarely stop a dog pulling and over time do terrible damage to the dogs throat, I might add that this can't be seen except on x-ray.
