This is quite simply because other dogs or squirrels are a lot more rewarding than being with their owners especially when owners are cross when they eventually do return.
Any Tips?
For starters be realistic! It is importanmt to let your dog socialise as much as possible, quite often a dog will come away from its friends if it has had a little time to play first! It is wise to keep the attention you give your dog a bit harder to get , make him work for it instead of lavishing him with affection on tap. This way he will value your attention more even when outdoors especially if you are armed with his favourite treats!
There are of course products that can help with the recall if your dog is especially bad such as the Master Plus form the Company Of Animals.
Alternatively, get a squeaky toy (a small one mind) and take it to the park with you. It's unlikley tghat your dog will not respond to a noise of this type, even if distracted by other things. Often sqeaking the toy and running in the opposite direction to your dog will get the desired result.
Anially, but perhaps most importantly, do not chase after your dog when he is off in another direction. This is often interpreted by your dog as a game which simply leads to him running further away from you. And, never repramand your dog when he fionally returns. In his eyes he has done what you have asked of him and so doesn't understand why he is being punished for it. More to the point, the next time you call him, the chances are he will think "the last time I went back I got told off, so that couldn't have been right... I'll try something else this time"
