Dog owners in Worcestershire have been advised to consider the advantages of getting their pets microchipped.
According the Horsefair, Broadwaters and Greenhill Partnership (HBGP), a microchip can be very useful in the event of an animal going missing.
"If a pet is lost or stolen or picked up by police, the microchipping increases the chances of them being reunited with their owners," said HBGP coordinator Justin Daniels.
The organisation this week staged an event with the RSPCA to allow people in the Worcestershire area the chance to get their pets microchipped for free, reports the Kidderminster Shuttle.
Mr Daniels described the event as a success, noting that a "continuous" queue of people came along to get their dogs, cats and rabbits tagged in this way.
According to figures from the RSPCA, over 450,000 animals in the UK have been fitted with microchips during the last five years.
The animal charity has hailed this as a painless, permanent and highly reliable means of pet identification.
