It can be great fun to get fit with a pet by enjoying plenty of dog walking sessions.
This is according to animal charity the PDSA, which reminded pet owners that ensuring pooches get enough exercise is a key responsibility. Another aspect of canine wellbeing that needs scrutiny is diet - according to recent research by Sainsbury's Finance an obesity epidemic is sweeping the UK's animal populations. Some 9.4 per cent of pets are severely overweight, while 29.8 per cent should slim down for health reasons. At the opposite end of the scale, around 13 per cent of canines are underweight. Commenting on how pets can battle the bulge, PDSA senior vet Elaine Pendlebury remarked: "Dogs love walks and if you walk them it's a great opportunity. You're getting fit, your pet is getting fit."
She added that it is important to know which dog food diets work for certain breeds, explaining that Chihuahuas need different sustenance to St Bernard pooches.
