After successfully completing an intensive course of dog training, Dixie is ready to head out onto the streets and tackle crooks. The crime-busting canine has been enlisted by Trading Standards (TS) to help in its fight against counterfeit goods. Working with Stirling Council and Clackmannanshire Council's joint TS team, the pesky pooch hits car boot sales in the hunt for fake DVDs. As part of her dog training, she was taught to sniff out the smell of plastic often used in counterfeit discs. The sessions involved using a tennis ball and reward and motivation-based methods. TS officer Brian Wilson, who came up with the idea of signing up a clever canine, said Dixie is a "huge asset" to the organisation's operations. "She has searched houses, vehicles, trailers as well as outside locations - all of which she has handled very well. We are all very pleased with her," he remarked. Last year, German shepherd mix Sable hit the headlines in the US after she took part in dog training to become a sniffer dog. The dedicated pooch helps Scott Reynolds find illegal sewer connections, reports the Detroit Free Press.
