Puppy owners living in areas where there have been sightings of foxes should be wary of leaving their young pet alone in the garden. Writing a column for the Daily Telegraph, vet Pete Wedderburn said one of his readers was right to be cautious of foxes, especially in the wake of recent attacks on human babies. Puppies should avoid solitary spells in the garden until around the age of six months, when breeds such as golden retrievers should be able to repel fox attacks. Young dogs should especially avoid heading into the yard alone during the early morning and evening, as these are the times that foxes are most likely to be around. Mr Wedderburn remarked: "You can make sure that you don't attract them [foxes] to your garden by ensuring that rubbish and food scraps are kept out of their reach." Keeping puppies away from foxes is just one aspect of bringing up a young dog - according to charity the Dogs Trust, owners must also make sure they carry out dog training and give their animal the right dog food.
