A dog that jumps up must be ignored instead of being told to get down, this is because even shouting at the dog or pushing him away is giving attention which is what the dog wants. Puppies should be taught not to jump up despite their "cute factor" from an early age again ignoring this behaviour is the way to go. However with puppies, you can leave a trailing line on them (when you are there to supervise) and step on it when the puppy approaches. This way the dog cannot jump up and learns to sit to get our attention instead. The final point here is that when the dog has stopped jumping up and sat down, it must be calmly praised thus showing that they will get the attention craved, but by sitting, not jumping.
